Adam Higgins

Adam Higgins (b. 1989, Huntington Beach, California) lives and works in Los Angeles, California. Higgins’s paintings require slow looking. At close range, they break down into a Post-Impressionist search for true chroma, with color serving as a key to undoing and reassembling perception. At mid-range, photography comes to the fore: camera obscura techniques used in Dutch still-life painting meet the double-page spreads of glossy magazines. Step back once more, and the paintings return to pure abstraction. Everything is in focus and therefore unseeable. The subjects in Higgins’s work are repeated until they lose their coherence, much like an ordinary word that, when repeated for the millionth time, becomes absurd.
